How to Choose the Right Domain Name for Your Business

Your domain name is your address online. It appears on your business cards, your trucks and your email. Here’s how to pick one you won’t regret.

Keep it short and easy to say

If you have to spell it out over the phone, it’s too complicated. Avoid hyphens, numbers and unusual spellings.

Choose .com when you can

Most Americans type .com by habit. If your ideal .com is taken, a .us or .co can work, but consider adding a word instead, such as your city or service.

Use your brand, your service or both

Your business name builds your brand. Adding a service or city (for example, “yourname-plumbing” or “yournamedenver”) can make your purpose clear at a glance.

Check for trademarks and social handles

Before you buy, search the USPTO trademark database and check whether matching social media handles are available.

Register it in your name

This is the most important rule. Make sure you, not your web designer, are listed as the domain owner. It protects your business if you ever change providers.

Turn on auto-renew and privacy

An expired domain can take your website and email offline overnight. Auto-renew prevents that, and privacy protection keeps your personal contact information out of public records where available.
