Google Business Profile: A Step-by-Step Setup Guide

When people search for a local business, Google often shows a map and a short list of companies before any websites. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and setting yours up properly is one of the most valuable free things you can do for your business.

1. Claim or create your profile

Search for your business on Google or go to Google Business Profile Manager and sign in with a Google account you control long term.

2. Verify your business

Google will ask you to verify that you run the business, typically by phone, email, video or postcard. You can’t unlock most features until you do.

3. Pick the right categories

Your primary category has a big effect on which searches you appear in. Choose the most specific one that fits, then add secondary categories for other services.

4. Fill out every field

Add your hours, phone number, website, services, service area and a clear description. Make sure your name, address and phone match your website exactly.

5. Add real photos

Upload photos of your team, your work, your storefront or your vehicles. Profiles with photos tend to get more clicks and calls.

6. Ask for reviews and reply to them

Make it easy for happy customers to leave a review by sending them your review link. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.

7. Post updates

Share offers, news and recent projects. Regular activity shows Google and customers that your business is active.
